SEAt was developed in response to a particular moment during my residency at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology September 1999 - July 2004. The catalyst was the occurrence of several suicides on campus. I wanted to contribute my creative energies to this situation through the creation of a public work that would offer this community a personal and collective experience of comfort, contemplation, and social engagement in public settings on campus.
For me this was also an experiment in creating a mobile environment of experience that had the capacity to create a very intimate experience for the people within it while maintaining visual contact and continuity of connection with place and community.
SEAt to SEA was developed for the Spark Festival 2008, quite a different context. The ¼ ton SEAt has rare opportunities to be exhibited due to shipping costs. I was very excited to re-imagine this work for the Spark Festival at the University of Minnesota. SEAt to SEA significantly transforms the earlier work to become both a sonic environment enveloping those interacting within it with the kinetically produced sea sounds that they generate with their movements. An extended soundscape was created through the wireless transmission of these sea sounds to locations within the public space remote from the installation.
This allowed me to explore new dimensions that interrogate ideas about presence, ambience, and contemplation. This exploration is very much in synch with my overarching research interest in the hybrid domain of tangible media that connects the physical world with virtual world.
